Step-by-Step Guide: Set Up Your MyGov Account and Link It to the ATO

Doing your Tax Return in Australia for the first time?
The first thing you need is to create your account at my.gov.au and link it to the ATO (Australian Taxation Office).
It’s a fairly simple process, but it does require following a few steps. Don’t worry — here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through it 👇
Step 1: Create your MyGov account

Go to the official website: my.gov.au

Register with your personal details: full name, email, and phone number.

Once your account is active, log in to continue
Paso 2: Solicita tu Linking Code
Para conectar tu cuenta con la ATO, vas a necesitar un Linking Code.
Este código se solicita por teléfono y solo es válido durante 24 horas, así que ten todo preparado antes de llamar.

✅ They’ll ask you to verify your identity:
Be ready to provide your TFN (if you have one), Australian address, full name, etc.
Step 3: Link your account to the ATO
Once you’ve received your Linking Code:

Log in to your MyGov account.

Select “Link a service” and choose ATO.

Enter the Linking Code you were given over the phone.
Useful tips

Call with time ⏳: It’s normal to wait at least 20 minutes.

Have your info ready 🧾: Payslips, address, TFN...

Write down your Linking Code ✍️: You only have 24 hours to use it.
